Tom Nguyen has always been one of Atlanta’s most entertaining and charismatic fighters. From his elaborate ring entrances to his never say die fighting style, he has entertained both boxing and MMA fans in Georgia for years.
After a two-year plus hiatus from the sport, Atlanta’s “Asian Sensation” returns on Friday, Oct 30 at Wild Bill’s! The man that makes a habit of fighting the best in front of him has chosen NOT to start off with a “tune up” fight, but to dive straight into the mix with a rematch with the only man to have beaten him in MMA, Rhomez Brower! The two fighters have fought each other twice, with both winning once. Since Nguyen took time off, Brower has still been going full steam ahead beating one of the Southeast’s toughest fighters in Brent Weedman.
On Friday, Oct 30 at Wild Bill’s it’s time for Tom Nguyen vs Rhomez Brower III.
In the weeks leading up to this epic fight, Nguyen will be sharing with the readers of GeorgiaFighters.com an exclusive online blog of his training regime, his new diet and where he’s at with life as we approach fight night.
Thursday, Oct 29 (Shocking News and Weigh-Ins)
The last few days have been an emotional roller coaster for me. My opponent, Rhomez Brower, is on a 30 day suspension which means that he can’t fight me on October 30th. His last fight was on October 4th and he was TKO’d. Nobody knew this because it did not show up in the stats on the major MMA websites. For a second, I felt like all of my hard training for the fight had been a waste. Luckily, my promoter, David Oblas, was able to find another opponent for me in a few hours. My new opponent is Seth Baczynski. It’s going to be a good tough fight as Baczynski brings a stellar 10-6 record to the table.
I weighed in today at 185 pounds and Seth weighed in 187 pounds. To pass some time, I hung out with a friend of mine for a couple of hours and talked about subjects that weren’t fight related. I’m going to stay up a little later because I know I’ll be fighting late tomorrow night. I’m definitely prepared to fight. A lot of people have helped me in my training but two people who come to mind are Nhan Nguyen (my brother) and Kevin Gittemeier. Both of these guys spent a lot of valuable time in training with me. Of course, I’d like to thank James Thorpe who will be in my corner tomorrow night with Kevin and Nhan. James actually did some sparring with me as well. And, I’d like to thank X3 Sports and Team Genesis. I’m looking forward to giving my best performance tomorrow.
Tuesday, Oct 27 (Relaxation)
I just finished my last day of training today. Now, I’m going to take tomorrow off because I just trained for six days in a row. I’ll do some light exercises on Thursday to take a couple of pounds off for the weigh-in. After my last fight with Rhomez, I actually thought about not fighting anymore. I wasn’t having fun doing it. Now that I am a few days away from making my return, I have to say that I will be having fun in there Friday night.
I’m known for going a little overboard with my victory celebrations. Starting with this fight, you’re going to see a new Tom Nguyen. Whether I win or lose, my reaction is going to be the same. No more cartwheels and no more leapfrogs. Don’t believe me? You’ll have to just come out and see for yourself. Of course, I have to win as well for you to see it.
Sunday, Oct 25 (The Final Stretch)
Just finished my last hard training session this afternoon. Now is the time to let my body recuperate for Friday night. I’m looking forward to giving it my all and going to war if necessary on Friday night. I don’t know what else I could have done different to prepare for this upcoming fight. This week, I’m going to have some really light workouts to keep my weight down. Right now, I’m weighing around 192 pounds after cheating with a chocolate milk shake and cake. I don’t really have a sugar tooth but for some reason, I just craved junk food today.
Thursday, Oct 22 (Refreshed)
I went back to training after taking a much needed day off and I have to tell you that I feel fantastic again. I guess everybody needs to recharge every now and then, and I’m not excluded. I ran another four miles today, and just did some brushing up on my technique.
I received my mask in the mail today and tried it on. It’s a little snug, but that’s ok. Also, my intro track for the fight is finished as well. I’m digging the beat. Hopefully, the audience will dig it as well, but if not, that’s ok.
The fight is now a week away. Tomorrow or should I say later on today, I’m going to check out the fights at Cowboys. Usually, watching fights the week before puts me in the mood to fight. I shouldn’t be struggling to make weight for this fight. I’m almost down to 185 pounds right now. This time, I won’t have to sit in a sauna for a couple hours which is fantastic.
Wednesday, Oct 21 (A Much Needed Day Off)
I did some training yesterday at Team Genesis in McDonough. Genesis has the most impressive facility in Georgia. They have two rings, a cage, and tons of mat space. If you live on the southside of Atlanta, I recommend going there. They have skilled instructors who have had their fair share of matches.
I’ve been doing some type of rigourous exercise for almost a month now and I think my body is finally feeling the effects of it. I’ve been feeling really tired every day for that last couple of weeks. My people told me that I’m overtraining and I need to take a day off. So, today I’m going to relax, teach a private lesson or two, and watch some video of fights or instructionals. Tomorrow, I should be back in full force.
I should be receiving my mask in the mail any day now. I’m looking to use it in my intro for my upcoming fight on October 30th.
I’ve still got to take care of selling tickets and prove that I am profitable to the promoters. If you live in the Atlanta area and you are interested in watching me fight, just drop me a line.
Monday, Oct 19 (Fighting in less than two weeks)
With my stomach and sore back pain finally behind me, I feel I can live a normal life again.
I’m weighing around 190 pounds right now, but I definitely have no problems dropping the last five pounds. As a matter of fact, I eat like crazy just to stay at 190.
This might be a pretty bold statement, but I feel that I am the best shape ever for a fight. Also, I feel that my technique has never been as good as it has been. This week is supposed to be the hardest week cardio wise. I really do want to put on a good show for the fans. I feel really bad about my last performance even though it was a “win”. I actually felt more gratified about the first fight between Rhomez and me. I didn’t get the decision, but I felt I was fighting to win the whole time. In our second fight, I felt I was fighting not to lose and that really bothers me.
Not only was my performance against Rhomez bad, but my intro was bad as well. I always try to put on entertaining intros for the crowd and I had a disappointing intro in my last fight. I’m working on getting a mix of songs for this fight and since the fight is going to be on Halloween Eve, I’m thinking of a costume as well…..
Thursday, Oct 15 (A Sore Back and a Stomach Ache)
I did a morning grappling session with Franz Mendez, a rugged fighter who’s not afraid to fight anybody. Unfortunately, I felt a little strain on my back, so I had to skip tonight’s BJJ class and sparring session at X3 Sports. Although the injury is minor, I didn’t want to take any chances of injuring myself further. I did get my four miles of jogging in along with some shadow boxing, so today wasn’t a complete waste. I’m pretty much in fight shape right now, I’m just fine tuning some technical parts of my game.
Right now, I have a stomach ache. I don’t know what it’s from. Maybe I jogged a little soon right after I ate a grapefruit and a PBJ sandwich. Hopefully, it’ll go away after a good night’s sleep.
The fight is two weeks away now. What are my thoughts on what’s going to happen? I don’t know. Maybe not the answer that everybody is expecting, but I’ve never been a good fortune teller. I just want to go out and throw down. I can promise that I’ve got a fantastic entrance in the making. I have a fan in Germany named Tom Nguyen who is making my intro music track. It’s going to be a mix. I’ve heard that people get as excited to watch my intros as much as my fights.
I do feel a little disappointed about the last fight with Brower. Although I got the decision from the judges, I didn’t feel I performed very well at all. My intro was lousy as well. I didn’t feel like I was enjoying the sport any more, so I decided to take an extended break. I needed to take some time off to handle some personal issues like separating from my wife and getting a divorce. During my separation, I took it upon me to work on getting my body more defined. I changed the way I ate and hit the weights more often at the local YMCA. With a new body and a rocky marriage behind me, I’m ready to make a return to the ring. I want to give the fans an exciting fight.
Wednesday, Oct 14 Blog A Day Off (Sort Of)
After jogging my four miles this morning and doing some shadow boxing with weights, I felt a little tired and felt that I needed a break. I was supposed to do a little wrestling work today, but I just didn’t feel so up to it. I’ve been training seven days a week for the last three weeks and I feel like things were catching up with me. I just got back from the grocery store where I just bought a bunch of organic tempeh on clearance at 99 cents. Tempeh is a meat substitute soy product. I’m going to do a little cooking, a little reading, and then I’m going to bed.
