Rumors are starting to swirl that the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather superfight could end up in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. But are these rumors….or is there any actual truth to it?
This is expected to be the biggest fight in the history of boxing. Early figures indicate this fight could sell out ANY venue that hosts it across the United States and that worldwide PPV numbers are expected to be in excess of 5 million PPV buys!
Here at GeorgiaFighters.com we have done a bit of investigating and it appears as though the chance of this fight landing in the Georgia Dome is a bit more than just rumors.
First off is the locations that the fight is being rumored for: Las Vegas, the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, the Louisiana Superdome, the new Yankee Stadium, Staples Center and the Georgia Dome.
Las Vegas is the front runner to land the fight as it is the obvious front runner for all major fights. Not many cities can compete with the site fee that can be offered by Las Vegas casinos and the destination spot
that it is. With that being said, the Mayor of Las Vegas has already suggested that all the casinos work together to land the fight by each casino putting in a site fee of x amount of money. Then for the first time ever, an outside venue will be built on the Strip to seat 30,000 spectators…then demolished after the fight is over!
The 30,000 seats would easily outnumber the seating capacity of other major venues in Las Vegas which seat about 12,000 – 15,000 (think MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay).
This idea would give a balance to all of the Vegas casinos to each put up x amount of money as a site fee while all of the casinos then benefit off the 30,000 plus fans in terms of gaming, hotel rooms, food and beverage sales, etc rather than one casino putting up the entire site fee and gaining most of the revenue.
The other venues all seem to be tied in major market appeal and size of the venues. The Georgia Dome and Louisiana Superdome can both fit 70,000 – 90,000 for a fight. The new Dallas stadium can hold more than 100,000 for a football game and can be fitted for more than 120,000 for a fight.
The Staples Center is the smallest of all the venues, but the largest in the always important field of celebrities and dollar value as it is in the heart of Los Angeles.
It is uncertain how many fans can fit in the new Yankees Stadium for a fight. But promoter Bob Arum has mentioned the strong possibility of
this venue and even held the press conference for Pacquiao’s last fight vs Miguel Cotto at Yankees Stadium. And of course, New York is the capital of all major media outlets.
So this leaves us with the Georgia Dome and where it fits into the puzzle.
The Georgia Dome is one of the larger venues in the above list and the fact that Atlanta has one of the busiest airports in the world, a Delta direct connection to many cities throughout the world and is one of the largest cities when it comes to the sheer number of hotels in one city always makes Atlanta a viable choice when the city is mentioned for hosting any major sporting attraction.
But one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle that Atlanta has is Al Bush.
Al Bush is not only the president of a sports marketing agency in Atlanta, but is a close friend and advisor to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Bush was the person responsible for bringing Mayweather to Wild Bill’s Fight Night a few months ago as a guest of the show and is also involved in trying to bring this fight to Atlanta.
Just a few days ago Bush called David Oblas of GeorgiaFighters.com and Wild Bill’s Fight Night to start the publicity for this fight and to coordinate with tv outlets in Atlanta to break the news of this fight possibly coming to the Georgia Dome.
Today, Bush told Oblas that Mayweather would be coming to Atlanta tomorrow (Wednesday) again to visit and possibly talk to media outlets.
“There’s some hurdles that we have to deal with because Georgia is an income tax state and Floyd lives in Las Vegas and Pacman in the Philippines,” said Bush on Tuesday afternoon.
The Louisiana Superdome is seeing the same issue regarding income tax, where that state has a 6% income tax.
Neither Nevada or Texas has a state income tax.
Promoter Bob Arum told SI.com that any city hosting this mega-fight would have to be a tax-free zone.
“It doesn’t make sense otherwise,” said Arum.
To that end, the state of Louisiana is working with representatives from their Governor’s office to come up with enough tax credits to make the city palatable or to waive the tax entirely.
When you’re talking about each fighter possibly making as much as $40 million from this fight, you can obviously see that any state that has an income tax is not a leader in landing this fight.
Will the state of Georgia do the same to land the biggest fight in the history of boxing at the Georgia Dome? And what do you think the chances of this fight coming to Atlanta is?

I hope this landmark event lands at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
I would definitely be there! Don’t forget we also have Marta that could transport fight fans easily to and from the event. That’s another point for our city.
i heard that vegas has it locked up and dallas lost contention. boy, it would have been cool in the “atl”-any good fights coming to atlanta?
