“The Pheonom” Douglas Lima of ATT Gwinnett repeated history on Friday night as he dismantled friend and foe Ben Saunders in the long awaited Bellator MMA Welterweight Tournament Final.
Two years ago the two combatants met in the same scenario with Lima winning with a 2nd round one punch TKO. On Friday night however, Lima put a staple on his domination of Saunders by brutally destroying the Orlando FL native.
In the first round Saunders came out aggressive but was simply being picked apart by a calm and collected Lima. Striking with beautiful counter punches and kicks the round was easily won by Lima regardless of the comments made by ringside announcers stating that it was a close round.
In the second, Lima went back to work and landed two uppercuts; the second of the two dropped Saunders and Lima followed to dish out some severe ground and pound against his bloodied opponent. At this point Saunders was bleeding severely out of both eyes while his lift eye was swollen shut. As Lima tried to get things back to his feet, Saunders tried a futile attempt to lock in a heel hook, but Lima once again stayed calm and worked his way out of danger.
Once they were back on their feet the end was near as a Lima landed a beautiful left hook to the body which setup a picture perfect kick to the blind left side of Saunders. The fight was immediately stopped as Lima wins the tournament once again and becomes $100,000.00 richer!
During the post fight interview Lima dedicated the fight to his newly born daughter. The only concern at this point is the right hand which Lima mentioned might be hurt again.
